Australia

Our cycling experience in Australia is limited to the Magnetic Island on the east coast and the Rottnest Island on the west coast near Perth. Cycling on these islands can be recommended.

(In addition, we could see that cycling was quite popular within Brisbane, with cyclists and pedestrians sharing the same paths.)

(Please remember travel insurance, use a helmet, lock your bicycles and keep your luggage safe. Please note that cycling in more remote areas in Australia could be risky, due to the long distance between populated places.)

Magnetic Island is a lovely island for biking, and it is easy to fing you way around. You can fly into Townsville Airport and then take the ferry to the island. The passenger ferry only takes 20 minutes. The best time to visit is between May and September. At this time the days are warm, and the evenings are cool.

It is a good idea to stay at one hotel and take daytrips. We can recommend hotel Peppers Blue on Blue in Nelly Bay. It is very close to the ferry terminal.

It is possible to rent bikes at Fish’n N Fuel’n at Mandalay Avenue.

Day 1: Trip to Picnic Bay.

You will experience lovely views and wonderful beaches.

The Reef Bar cafe in Picnic Bay can be a good choice for lunsj.

Day 2: Trip to Horseshoe Bay.

Rock wallabies live by the sea in Magnetic Island Reef. They are so sweet, but must not be fed.

It is a great chance to see koalas in the Forts Walk. They sleep mostly the whole day in the trees.

Lunsj can be recommended in Horseshoe Bay at The Early Bird.

On the way back it is a good idea to take a tea or coffee stop at Up the Garden Path Restaurant and Bar in Nelly Bay. Here it is possible to watch kookaburas be fed. It is really interesting.

It is likely a short ride from here back to your accomondation.

It is a good idea to stay more days at this Magnific Island. There are many roads to bike or walk.

These cockatoos can be seen in Arcadia. You can walk or bike to get here.
